Dermographism means “skin writing” and is the most common subtype of physical urticaria. Within a few minutes of light pressure or friction being applied to the skin, redness (erythema) and swelling (oedema) develop in that area. This reaction is usually itchy and can become more pronounced as the person scratches.
In some patients it can be severe enough to affect daily quality of life.
Factors such as temperature changes, stress, dry skin and sweating can increase symptoms. Diagnosis is usually made through physical examination.
