Hirsutism is a condition characterised by an increase in thick, dark, coarse hair in women in areas typical of men – particularly the face, chin, chest, abdomen and back. This type of hair growth usually develops due to hormones, particularly the male hormones known as androgens.
Hair in these areas, which is normally fine and light-coloured in women, becoming male-pattern in nature can be a sign of hormonal imbalances or certain conditions. Because hirsutism can be distressing both cosmetically and psychologically, it's important to investigate the underlying cause and determine an appropriate treatment plan.
