Intertrigo is a type of skin condition that occurs in the folds of the body. The warm, moist environment created in these areas, combined with skin friction, leads to irritation, redness and sometimes infection. This condition is actually a form of eczema that occurs where two skin surfaces are in constant contact and is often infected with a fungus we call Candida. It can be triggered by sweat, moisture and secretions such as urine, and can become secondarily infected with fungi or bacteria. Excessive sweating, obesity, diabetes and conditions affecting the immune system can be listed as contributing factors. It usually affects skin folds (such as the armpits, under the breasts, the groin, the neck or abdominal folds).
Symptoms
Redness
Moist, soft skin
A burning or itching sensation, sometimes pain
An unpleasant odour in the irritated area
Cracking or peeling on the surface of the skin
Signs of fungal or bacterial infection (in advanced cases)
Causes
Moisture: Sweating or inadequate ventilation
Friction: Skin surfaces being in constant contact
Fungi and bacteria: Warm, moist environments are ideal for micro-organisms to multiply.
Treatment and prevention
Keeping the affected area dry and clean
Choosing cotton, breathable clothing
Treatments to prevent sweating
Using special creams to reduce friction and protect the skin barrier
Applying medicated creams where recommended by a doctor
If intertrigo recurs frequently, or doesn't improve despite treatment, it's important to consult a dermatologist.
