Itching is an unpleasant sensation, local or affecting the whole body, that creates the urge to scratch the skin. It can have many causes. It may develop due to dry skin, skin conditions such as eczema, hives, psoriasis or scabies, deficiencies of iron or vitamins, various systemic conditions related to the liver, thyroid or kidneys, medication side effects, or psychological causes. For this reason, when a patient presents with itching, a history is taken and an examination is carried out first, and tests are requested if necessary to identify the cause, with a treatment plan made accordingly.
Itching that does not resolve is a symptom that should always be evaluated by a doctor.
