A lipoma is a benign tumour that develops in soft tissue. It usually forms beneath the skin, caused by an abnormal build-up of fat cells. Lipomas are painless and grow slowly. They pose no health risk and don't require treatment. If they cause cosmetic concern, or discomfort due to their location (particularly in areas over bone), removal may be requested.

Slow growth: They generally grow slowly, over the course of years.
Soft and mobile: They can easily be moved when pressed with a finger.
Beneath the skin: They usually form close to the skin's surface, though they aren't superficial.
Painless: They're mostly painless, though in certain locations (particularly areas over bone) they can cause pain.
