Melanoma

Melanoma is a tumour of the cells in our skin called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce the pigment that gives skin its colour. Melanoma is one of the most lethal known human tumours. However, with early diagnosis, complete recovery is possible. Various treatment methods have also been developed today for patients with advanced-stage disease. Risk for melanoma increases if there are relatives in the family with melanoma, if there are more than 50 moles on the body and/or high-risk moles, with a history of sunburn, and in people with red hair or a freckled complexion.

We recommend these individuals undergo a skin examination. Beyond this, everyone should carry out ‘self’ skin examinations and practise sun protection. Consult your dermatologist about your moles, particularly any that are new, changing quickly, or looking different.
