Milia are yellow-white bumps that often form around the eyes. A single one is called a Milium; multiple ones are called Milia. They're small cysts containing the protein keratin. If they develop spontaneously, they're called ‘primary milia’; if they develop due to another cause, they're called ‘secondary milia’. Primary milia are most commonly seen in newborns but can be seen at any age. Secondary milia develop due to certain conditions.
Milia can form due to long-term use of cortisone or oily creams, make-up, trauma or burns, long-term sun damage, exfoliating procedures such as peels or dermabrasion, or conditions that cause blistering of the skin. They're also seen more often with age.
Depending on the location and number, treatment methods can include curettage (scraping), exfoliating creams and solutions, peels, cauterisation and cryotherapy.
