This is a nail plate growth disorder characterised by opaque, yellow-brown thickening of the nail, accompanied by curving. In Ancient Greek, “grýps” or “gryphos” means curved – likely the origin of the name for this thickening, increasingly curved nail disorder. Onychogryphosis tends to appear with advancing age, usually alongside accompanying skin conditions, circulatory problems or trauma. Long-term wear of tight shoes can also make this deformation more likely to develop.
