Onychorrhexis is a condition involving longitudinal ridging of the nails and increased brittleness. Lengthwise cracks, grooves or splits are seen on the surface of the nail. The most common cause is ageing, but iron-deficiency anaemia, vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as biotin and zinc, and certain systemic conditions such as hypothyroidism can also lead to this presentation. Repeated trauma (excessive filing, manicures, exposure to chemicals), frequent contact with water, and certain skin conditions can also trigger onychorrhexis.
What can be done?
Any underlying condition should be treated first, if present.
Nails should be moisturised regularly, and protective oils or care products used.
Manicures, filing and chemical contact should be reduced as much as possible.
Exposure to detergents, colognes and similar substances should be minimised.
Wearing gloves can be protective.
Getting enough vitamins and minerals in your diet, and supporting biotin and zinc intake, can help strengthen the nails.
