Pityriasis alba is usually seen in children and young adults. It presents as light-coloured, patchy areas on the skin. These are particularly found on the cheeks, arms and legs. The exact cause isn't fully known, but it's associated with dry skin and a tendency toward atopy. Some authorities consider it a mild form of eczema. It's seen more often in darker skin types or following summer tanning. It can be confused with vitiligo and certain fungal conditions. It usually clears on its own within months. However, the lighter areas can sometimes persist for longer. Moisturising the skin during this time is important. Medicated creams can be added for some patients.
