Raynaud's Phenomenon

Raynaud's phenomenon is a circulatory problem in which exposure to cold or stress causes temporary narrowing of the blood vessels in the extremities, such as the fingers and toes, leading to colour change, numbness and pain. It causes the fingers to change colour in sequence: white (blood flow stopping), blue (reduced oxygen) and red (blood flow resuming).

Raynaud's is classified in two forms:

  • Raynaud's Disease (Primary Raynaud's): Occurs without an underlying condition and is generally milder. It's more common in young women.

  • Raynaud's Phenomenon (Secondary Raynaud's): Develops due to an underlying condition, such as systemic sclerosis, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. This form can be more serious and can lead to long-term complications.

Treatment generally involves avoiding the cold, staying away from stress, dressing warmly, and medications that improve blood circulation.
