hinophyma is a chronic skin condition, known as an advanced form of rosacea, characterised by thickening, irregular enlargement and nodular changes of the nose. It's seen more often in men and occurs due to excessive growth of the oil glands in the nasal area. This condition causes the nose to take on a coarse, irregular, swollen appearance.
Changes that can be observed in rhinophyma can be listed as follows:
Thickening of the nose: Thickening of the skin layer changes the overall structure of the nose.
Irregular enlargement: Asymmetric enlargement of the nose, losing its normal shape.
Nodular structures: Small, raised nodules (lump-like structures) forming on the skin.
Enlarged pores: Large, prominent pores becoming visible on the surface of the nose.
Oily, shiny skin: Excessive oiliness and shine on the skin.
Drooping of the nose tip: Loosening and drooping developing at the tip of the nose with long-term disease.
Rhinophyma is a chronic, advanced stage of rosacea. It's more common in individuals with a family history. Factors such as hot weather, spicy foods, alcohol and stress can trigger the condition. Long-term skin inflammation and going untreated cause permanent changes in the skin's structure.
In treatment, ablative methods such as laser applications, electrocautery, dermabrasion or surgical resection can be used to correct the shape of the nose. Alongside these, being under a dermatologist's care for rosacea control, continuing any necessary topical and/or systemic medications, avoiding triggers, and maintaining a skin care routine are also part of treatment.
