A venous lake is a blue-purple, dilated blood vessel, either level with the skin or raised above it. It most commonly appears on the lower lip, but can more rarely also be seen on the ear and other areas of the face. Weakening of connective tissue with advancing age and chronic sun damage make it more likely to develop. It isn't a malignant lesion.
Treatment can involve cautery or, preferably, laser treatment. Vascular lasers may need to be repeated over several sessions depending on the size of the lesion.
