Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot)

Tinea pedis, commonly known as “athlete's foot”, is the name given to a fungal infection of the foot. The causative agents are various dermatophyte species. It usually presents with redness, peeling, cracks or blisters between the toes. It's usually itchy. Besides between the toes, it can also be seen on the sole and can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. This infection occurs more commonly in moist, warm environments, such as gyms, swimming pools or shared showers. Treatment involves topical and/or oral antifungals, depending on the severity and extent of the condition. Treatment for eczematisation is added where necessary. Taking measures to strengthen the skin barrier is important. In untreated cases, the infection can spread, symptoms can worsen, and it can spread to the toenails. Because the skin's integrity is compromised, micro-organisms entering through this route can cause infection beneath the skin or in the leg's blood vessels.

The following steps can be taken to prevent tinea pedis infection:

  • Keep your feet dry: Fungi develop in moist environments. For this reason, dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. Make sure your feet are dry after washing.

  • Wear moisture-wicking socks: Choose socks made from cotton or moisture-wicking materials to reduce sweating. Change your socks as they become sweaty throughout the day.

  • Choose breathable footwear: Try to wear shoes made from leather or other breathable materials. Avoid non-breathable materials such as plastic or rubber.

  • Rotate your shoes: Try not to wear the same shoes on consecutive days. Give shoes time to dry completely.

  • Protect yourself in shared spaces: Don't walk barefoot in shared showers, changing rooms or swimming pools. Use slippers or sandals.

  • Use antifungal powder or spray: If you're particularly at risk, you can use an antifungal spray or powder in your shoes to help prevent fungal growth.

  • Pay attention to hygiene: Wash your feet regularly and maintain good hygiene. Also avoid using other people's towels or shoes.
